After the Rain

I took some pictures of our yard in bloom, but missed the flowers in the front pot while they were in full bloom. Everything sure looks lovely right now. But with temps in the 90's, they may soon look a little scortched.
The honeysuckle in the back yard on the arbor sweetened up the entire yard.

5th Trailer is Ready to go

We finally have our fifth wheel ready to take on its maiden voyage. It is clean, really clean! It is like-new clean (since as you recall my mentioning that in its 20 years of age it was only taken out 10 times by its former owners. It has been sitting in a heated Idaho workshop all these years, out of the weather, waiting for us to come and buy it.) We will take it to Mt. Pleasant for the 4th of July to be with Bryce, Kate, Kimball and Kate's family who recently moved there full-time. We also hope to do some camping and four-wheeling while we are in that neck of the woods.

Our Fifth Wheel and new (to us) Truck. (Okay so they don't match, oh, well.)

We enter into the living room. Door is behind the dinette.Looking from the entrance into the kitchen and bedroom beyond. A closer look at the kitchen and dinette.
The bedroom and Hall closet. There are two closets on each side of the bed.
The sink by the hall closet.
Bathroom across from the sink.
Final look at the living room. The TV will sit on the shelf behind the chair. Notice how cute all the curtains look.

A Fun Week!

Last week we went to Bear Lake and joined Lydia and Ted for their vacation with their kids and grandkids. There are now 57 of them. They had T-shirts made-- kind of like the Heinz 57 logo, but called Gibbonz 57. They rented a 15 bedroom cabin in which they all fit. This cabin was a block away from our condo, so we joined them for noon and evening meals and played lots of games.

We arrived on Tuesday, the day after they did. On Wednesday and Thursday it rained, but Thursday afternoon several of us went down to the lake. We provided life jackets, boogie boards, and sand toys for everyone to use, which made it a lot better for them. It was windy and chilly and the lake had had whitecaps earlier, so Kayaking was out. Several of them played in the lake, anyway, and made the most of their vacation.

On Friday, they left, but it was the best day of the week--sunny and warm. We took our kayaks out and then went on a four-wheeling ride into the foothills above the lake. We got into some nice areas with trees. The more open areas were lush green from all the rain with lots of wild flowers. Every so often we came to a lookout point and could view the entire lake and houses below. It was great!

Came home Saturday and helped Derek get his elk packed up for the trip to Denver to deliver it.

Father's Day has been nice. I made rolls and pork chops for dinner and set the table with china. Derek made breakfast for Ed before he took off. Talked briefly with Bryce before he, Kate, and Kimball flew to California to join her family and a cruise. Amber has called, and we talked to Texas on Oovoo. Eddie is supposed to call any minute.

Mini-vacation

We are heading for our condo at Bear Lake. Lydia and her family are renting a 15 bedroom cabin, so we'll hang out with her. Ed will take Ted on a 4-wheeler ride. It's going to be rainy and cool, but, oh, well. We'll play lots of games.

An Inspiring Evening

Tonight was the Empty Nesters Home Evening. It was very inspiring as the author of the book, "Tell My Story Too", Jolene S. Allphin, came and spoke to us. The has spent the last nine years gathering stories about the Willie and Martin Handcart companies. She had many prints done by the artist, Julie Rogers, who paints scenes of many of these stories. You can check it out on www.tellmystorytoo.com.

Anyway, it was a beautiful evening and Ed and I came away feeling much lifted in spirit.

A nice weekend

June 13, 2009

Today seemed to go fast. We tinkered in the 5th wheel and I did another web search for a TV for the trailer. I found one, finally, in Salt Lake and so we arranged to pick it up later in the day.

Ed spotted Kenny and Lloyd coming back from their mission. There was a big banner and balloons in front of their house. It reminded him of our aborted mission, and it made us feel kind of sad.

I called Nancy to wish her a belated birthday. She reminded me that some couples serve six month missions, some serve for 12 months, others for 18, and others for 23. We served a six month mission. When she put it that way, it made me feel better.

Then Ed went to Salt Lake to get fittings changed on the propane tanks while I colored my roots and prepared dinner. When he came home, we drove to Bryce and Kate's with the dinner and ate with them. We had a really nice time with them and played a partial game of Settlers of Catan. We had to leave at 8:00 to go buy the TV, so no one really won, but Bryce, Ed, and I tied with 6 points each.

June 14, 2009

It is Sunday. Today Kenny and Lloyd reported their mission in Sacrament Meeting. Afterwards we were invited to the open house. The meal was really good and it was fun to visit with some of the other ward members who were also invited.

We decided to call Brazil. We talked to Pres. and Sis. Frei, but couldn't get hold of Pres. and Sis. Johnson. They will leave Brazil in two more weeks. Then the Belo East Mission will be dissolved and two new missions created further north. A mission in Rio will also be dissolved. The cities in those two missions will be redistributed in these new missions and part of Belo East will be put in the Belo mission. These changes are part of the Church's effort to ease the financial crunch and make things more effective.

We also called Elder and Sis. Call, who replaced us. It was good to find out how all of our Brazilian friends are doing. The Calls are doing really well with the mission. We also learned that there are two other couples in Brazil who have been called to be S&I coordinators, and the Calls have a replacement for themselves when they leave. That was gratifying to learn. I guess we started something that will become very important to the Church in that country as time goes by.

Sunny Day!

June 12, 2009

Hooray, the sun came out today! We took advantage by going on a morning bike ride (for exercise), came home, packed a lunch, and took our four-wheelers into the mountains. As we left, we could see clouds gathering in the distance. The ride up Farmington Canyon was cloudy and we approached the top, we rode back into winter.

We saw snowdrifts that were six feet deep and the temperature chilled right down. Brrrr... we had to put on jackets and I layered with my cashmere wool sweater. But, it was wonderful to be out and the view was magnificent! The trees had all greened up and water was flowing in the creek that ran along side the rode. It was a really great ride.

We ate our lunch in the Sunset campground and then headed home. I forgot our camera, so I have no pictures to post.

The machines were pretty muddy still from our last visit at Bear Lake, so Ed washed them and I headed for the stores to get items we need for the 5th Wheel so that we can move in, like slip-proof shelf paper, silverware holder ( yes, we have a drawer big enough to house one, in fact there are three of them in the kitchen,) and there is room under the sink for a real waste basket.

I've been searching online for a 26 inch TV, but I've just about had it. I can't find the resolutions I want, and all the new technology is confusing. I found one that seemed perfect, it is advertised in some places as a TV, but sells as a monitor. I've got to find out if it does both. Ed learned that the propane tanks on the trailer need new valves--one more expense and thing to deal with. Will we ever be ready to take it out?????

Like the iron

The new iron is great. I'm glad the old one broke. The weather keeps changing. Still, I called today and informed the committe that I'm not going on the trek. Weather in Moab isn't looking good, now. Maybe we'll stay home and watch movies.

Drove to Sandy and Ed had an MRI done on his lower lumbar. Visited Ed's Mom's house and saw the eco-friendly bamboo floor Dennis installed in her bedroom. It really is beautiful!

Now, it's the iron

Today was supposed to be D-day as far as the cleaning of the 5th Wheel. I was almost through ironing and hanging all the curtains when the iron quit. I couldn't believe it! So I had to go out and buy a new iron. One has to be careful what one says aloud. First our washing machine went out on us last month--$660 (with two $50 rebates, only one of which has come back). Next we got a nail in the sidewall of a tire on our car coming back from Portland--$800+. Last week the disposal got a hole in it--$100, at which time I said, "What else is going to break?" There you go, I said it, and sure enough something else stopped working. At the least I got the iron on a good sale, $45, marked down to $29.99+tax, and then I will get another 20% off tomorrow when I go back with my coupon. But this time, I'm zipping my lips!

I will say, as we move things back into the trailer, it looks very nice--like new! All our hard work is paying off and we feel very rewarded.

I am having second thots about the trek next week. The weather is going to be stormy half the days and I've heard that those people trekking this week are miserable. It has rained every day, is muddy and cold, and their tents are blowing down and they've had to run for cover under the picnic pavilion. I must say that they are getting a true pioneer experience. Maybe Ed and I will take our trailer and 4-wheelers and drive to Moab where the temperatures are higher.

Almost there!

June 10, 2009

Yesterday I put lemon oil on the cabinets in the 5th Wheel and Ed steam-cleaned the carpets. This is a milestone. It means that we are almost finished with getting the trailer ready to take out. We still need to iron and then hang up the curtains. The curtains date the 5th Wheel because they don't put curtains in trailers anymore, just venetian blinds. This trailer has those, as well. I hope the curtains will make it look cozy but not busy. When it's all done, we'll post pictures.

After I finished with the cleaning I went on a hike. I haven't been out in the mountains for over a month, nor have I been doing daily exercising since I have really been pushing to finish up the cleaning of the trailer. I could tell it, too. After pushing up the steep slopes for 40 minutes, I was ready to turn around and come back. I'm going to have to work out every day this week if I intend to go on the pioneer trek next week.

I checked the carpets this morning and they are not dry, probably because the weather has turned cold and rainy and it will take longer.

Yesterday Ed also went to see Dr. Rasmussen. He has ordered an MRI on his back to see if there is a problem in the lower lumbar that is causing his leg pain and numbness. The hip pain, he feels, is because there is no socket. So in a few months, Ed will have the last (and final, we hope) surgery to put in a complete hip with both ball and socket--something we are not looking forward to. We will wait until November so that we can enjoy our planned vacations and be sure that his infection is dead.

After the doctor visit, we met Ed's mother, and Cheryl and Dennis at the Coachman restaurant for dinner. They serve full-course family style dinners that are very good and reasonably priced. I brought more than half mine home, as usual. It was down-pouring the whole time we were eating.

Concert in the Neighbor's Backyard Park

Saturday, June 6, 2009

Our Friends, Bill and Barbara, invited us to the annual neighborhood concert. Once a year, their neighborhood is invited to the home of the Johnsons for a backyard concert. The backyard is like a park. The Johnsons are good friends with local artists. I have included brief videos of what the music was like. It was a great evening, and the rain held off until the last song was being played.

Bill, Barbara, Cyndy, and Ed.

Gathering for the concert!

Kimball and Uncle Derek's Elk

Friday, June 5, 2009

Kimball had a good time spending the night at Grandma's house. When Daddy came home he showed him the elk head up close that Uncle Derek is mounting in Grandpa's garage. Kimball isn't too sure about the big animal but feels safe enough in Daddy's arms. It sure looks real!!!!

Kimball Spends the NIght--A Nice Reprieve!

This past week has been a hard work week. I intensified my efforts to get the 5th Wheel cleaned. I had to juggle my time spent there with cleaning the house, washing clothes and working in the yard. Most of our plants died in the front yard while we were on our mission due to a clogged sprinkler head that our housesitters didn't bother to clean, so they didn't get any water. Because of that, the weeds had taken over. I took time to spray them with round-up and then I discovered that a bed of ants had made their home in the flower bed. I started digging them out and spraying with insecticide, unearthing the queen bee and many eggs. As I proceeded with my digging, I discovered that their home was huge and went deep into the earth. Two days later, I am still digging and killing what I hope are the last remaining ants. I also discovered that the roots of the wicked morning glory weed go deep within the earth. Roundup may have killed the upper plants, but the roots remain. So, I have to decide whether to try and sterilize the ground and let it sit for a year, or go ahead and put new plants in and hope I can keep the weeds under control.

Ed has also been helping by steam cleaning the 5th Wheel's couch and bench cushions. As he was progressing with that, we our kitchen disposal got a hole in it, and so Ed had to replace it. So, in the past month, we have had to replace the washing machine, the tires on the car, and now the disposal--all unplanned expenses, plus there have been a lot of extra expenses on the truck and fifth wheel that we hadn't planned on. I hope we're to the end of it.

Kimball came over (or rather Kate brought him) about 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. His visit was a welcome change from all the work I have been doing of late. He is actively crawling now, which means that his hand motor skills are also developing and he can clumsily pick up and hold onto objects. He is able to entertain himself if there is something interesting in front of him, and he is good for a few minutes with any one object or thing. I spent the afternoon doting on him and finding new things for him to do.

If we are in the house, I sit and the floor and crawl around with him. He will play with something and then looks over to see if I am watching, which I am, smiles at me, and then goes on with his play. He finds the throw rugs on the tiled floor in the kitchen and hall very interesting. He likes to pick up the edges and turn them over.

I opened up the lower drawer in the kitchen with the tupperware bowls in them. He pulled a couple of them out and then lost interest when he noticed the bottom liner of the drawer. He spent the rest of his trying to pull it out. Of course, he wasn't successful because the rest of the bowls were still in there holding the liner in place.

I put three refridgerator magnets (an orange, lime, and apple, each about 2 inches in diameter) down low on the front of the fridge. He crawled over to them, pulled them off, and was fascinated with them, dropping them on the floor and scooting them across the tile, and of course, tasting them.

I also took him outside and Ed and I put him on the four-wheeler and rode around the block at 5 miles an hour. He didn't like sitting in between us, so we put him in front of Ed and I wrapped my arms around Ed and held onto Kimballs upper arms. Ed placed one arm in front of him, using one arm to steer. Kimball loved it, his wisping hair catching the breeze.

I also took him for a walk in the stroller and later, just before his bedtime, I carried him around the house to inspect all the trees and other plants. In the process, I stepped on something and I got stung through my crocs up by my big toe. I couldn't pull the shoe off while I was being bit because I was holding Kimball. I hobbled into the house and it took a few minutes to get Kimball settled into bed before I could soak it in hot water and epson salts, a trick we learned while swimming in the ocean several years ago and Ed got stung by a fish through his Tevas. It still bothers me a bit, but it isn't as bad as when I first got stung.

Kimball slept from about 8:00 p.m. until 1:15 a.m. and then woke up and I gave him a bottle. I was smart enough to go to bed at 9:00, but now can't go back to sleep and so decided to write this entry (at 5:00 in the morning.) I am so glad to be having these experiences with Kimball. He is pure joy!

Went to the Park with Kimball

June 2, 2009

Today Kate and Kimball came over. We ate at Tasty Donuts. Kimball got to eat cut-up pieces from chicken soup. He has learned to feed himself (although most of it falls on the floor.)

Afterwards we went to the Park.
The ducks weren't too interested in eating our day-old bread, probably because there were a lot of other children at the park and in all likelihood, they had already eaten. However, Kimball was most interested in them.

He found the playground equipment entertaining, even though he is still too small for most of it.

Digging In!

This past week has been spent mostly cleaning the 5th Wheel we purchased. It is a very laborious job and not fun. Since the trailer has sat for 20 years, it is dirty and has a tacky film over the walls and cabinetry. I got through 2/3 of it and realized my first cleaning did not remove the film, so I have to reclean everything. At least, I got all the dirt out and so the second cleaning should go much faster, but it is discouraging and is slowing the process down. When I am finally finished, we will have a very nice trailer that will be like new for a fraction of the cost of a newer one, since it wasn't abused at all, and was only taken out about 10 times in those 20 years.

Last week our kitchen disposal got a hole in it, so we had to replace that. We are not having good luck. First our washing machine broke, then we had to replace our car tires, and now the disposal. I hope everything else keeps working. We also had to buy a microwave for the 5th wheel.

On Sunday, Bryce, Kate, and Kimball came for Sunday dinner. Kimball has sprouted four new top teeth. He is crawling very well and pulls himself into a standing position. He made short work of the books on the occasional table in the living room, dropping them onto the floor--it is a perfect height for him right now. We get to have him for an over-nighter on Thursday. That should be interesting.

We went on a short bike ride on Saturday and today. It feels good to be getting out on them. Hopefully, this will help Ed build some body strength. Summer is certainly here, and I am enjoying the warm air and sunshine.
